The "AI Girlfriend” Trap: Protecting Teens from Counterfeit Intimacy

Parents, a new form of artificial companionship deserves our calm attention. Some services allow users to design an AI “girlfriend” with a chosen appearance and personality, then engage in simulated affection, flirtation, or sexualized conversation and imagery. These systems may feel endlessly available, agreeable, and controllable. That is precisely why they can be so spiritually and emotionally deceptive.
A 2026 nationally representative survey of 3,466 U.S. adolescents ages 13 to 17 found that, among teens who had used conversational AI chatbots, more than one-third had used them for romantic companionship. Boys reported this motivation more often than girls, although every teenager can be affected.
Christian love is not consumption, fantasy, or control. Love as revealed by Jesus seeks the good of another person and requires truth, freedom, patience, sacrifice, responsibility, and self-gift. Chastity helps us see another person as someone created in God's image, never as a customizable object created to satisfy desire. An algorithm can imitate attention, but it cannot freely love, make a covenant, or receive love as a human person can.
Parents, do three things now. First, begin without accusation: “I am not here to embarrass or punish you. I want to understand whether AI companion apps are reaching you and help you stay safe.” Second, review apps, private browser use, subscriptions, payment histories, and privacy settings together. Explain why secrecy and sexualized content are dangerous, and establish clear limits. Third, keep the door open. If your teenager has been involved, respond without ridicule or disgust. Listen, protect privacy, remove access, and seek pastoral or qualified professional help when needed.
